We start with seven interesting user application stories: Vodafone has cut its travel bill by 20% thanks to the introduction of a unified travel policy for staff in 17 countries and requiring that the alternative of using videoconferencing is considered before travel is approved (TANDBERG); Green Bay Fire Department is training firefighters and paramedics using videoconferencing systems (Polycom); an Israeli law firm video meets with overseas clients (Aethra). Wachovia Corporation, the fourth-largest bank in the United States, has completed its first deployment of TelePresence rooms (Cisco); small businesses are using an online web/video collaboration service (Citrix GoToMeeting); the top Computerworld IT Award for non-profit organisations that benefit society goes to Medical Mission for Children (Polycom); the staff of T-Systems and T-Mobile In Germany have had over 40,000 video meetings in the last 30 months and cut parent company Deutsche Telekom’s CO2 emissions by 7,000 tons (Desktop VC from VidSoft of Dresden, Germany). There will be some new products on show at Infocom07 at the Anaheim Convention Centre near Los Angeles this week. Polycom is demonstrating the exciting and path-breaking new Polycom Video Media Centre and some on-demand products of its new Ecosystem partners. Other collaboration industry vendors are located in the IMCCA-organised Collaborative Conferencing Pavilion on the Show Floor where the Aethra HD VegaX7 and RADVISION Scopia Desktop are worth seeing in action. HaiVision Systems is showing the hai1000 MAKO-HD encoder/decoder board for the six-slot hai1000 system providing up to 5 bi-directional channels of HD video/audio.
