Video conferencing technology leader LifeSize has identified the areas that it believes will cause key shifts in the market in 2013.
Reflecting upon a year which saw Skype hit by a significant security breach, LifeSize VP EMEA Andreas Wienold highlighted security as a top concern, particularly for businesses using free software. He says that, especially in regulated sectors, “employees may be breaking the law just by having these tools on their desktop,” due to their insufficient security features.
The risk of data breaches caused through online communication services, he believes, could lead to an increase in the uptake of dedicated video conferencing solutions. This has been further boosted by a dramatic reduction in the price of HD solutions because the infrastructure can now be hosted virtually.
Travel costs are also an increasing drain on company resources and Wienold believes this will see a continuation of the rise in flexible working schemes and meetings held via video conferencing in many workplaces.
Finally, Wienold predicts a decrease in email usage – which he says has “basically just become a tool for people to cover their back” – as companies aim to manage the amount of data they produce on a daily basis.
