Double Robotics (www.doublerobotics.com) has sold out of Double’s first production run, and is now taking orders for shipments in early 2013.
The device, and concept, is simple. A set of wheels for an iPad that allows it to go “anywhere” you aren’t. Actually, it’s a set of wheels and a stick. And a motor. And the open-tok app from tokbox.
Yes, there are problems: like other robots it doesn’t do stairs on its’ own and can’t press the buttons for the elevator either, and at 15lbs weight you might want to make sure it isn’t let unattended in a public place for fear it might go walkabout. But the bottom line is that with decent functionality and a sensible price, its is going to give us a new definition of telepresence and open up a whole new world for many people. We like it!
